Dongwoon discovers his power when he’s five. It’s eight in the morning and he’s clinging to his mother’s fingers, begging her not to leave him behind. She pats his head, telling him it’ll be all right, the teachers here are friendly, and lets go of his hand. He begins to cry as the front door swings behind her.

Somewhere between that moment and the teacher leading him into the classroom, Dongwoon acquires a gorgeous stuffed unicorn. Its sewn-on eyes are strangely warm, as if the doll’s trying to comfort him. Everyone will want to play with you, especially with me around, it seems to say, and miraculously, it’s prophetic. Dongwoon comes up with many theories about the origin of the unicorn, but a few more incidents later, the truth comes out: He spontaneously generates inanimate objects when he’s nervous.

This is something, even at the ripe old age of twenty, that very few people know.

“We have a super-maknae,” Kikwang says, beaming, when Dongwoon conjures a pair of pink pom-poms while they’re practicing for their debut stage. Doojoon and Yoseob laugh along, trying to be supportive, and Junhyung and Hyunseung merely look confused at his incompetence. Dongwoon throws the pom-poms in a corner and tries to pretend the whole thing never happened, which proves difficult when Yoseob asks him to materialize ramyun for dinner (Dongwoon then explains, sadly, that he has no control when or what he generates, and Yoseob orders chicken). All things considered, they take it much better than he expected.

With time, it becomes slightly less of a problem. It helps that the band knows, and they’re quick to help when something goes wrong during a rehearsal or when he conjures a can of sardines during a variety show. Dongwoon’s always a little nervous when he’s in front of a camera, gripping the nearest object, usually a microphone, like it’s his lifeline. There’s nothing he can do, he tells himself, other than being cautious.

They’re doing another mass concert with 4minute when Dongwoon starts breaking his own rules. Hyunah, whiney, stupid, maybe-kind-of-cute Hyunah, is just inches away from him, muttering inaudible nonsense into Sohyun’s ear, and Dongwoon starts to feel daring. Doojoon gives him a concerned look when he clasps his hands in front of his chest, but Dongwoon shakes it off, feeling inexplicably comfortable. There’s nothing in his hands.

Hyunah turns away from Sohyun a few moments later, looking out into the crowd, and Dongwoon pushes the boundaries a little more, taking a hand and punching her shoulder. She gapes at him (she’s always been easy to tease), and he winces, feeling the familiar sensation of blood rushing into his cheeks and hands. He freezes for a tantalizing beat. Nothing happens, and then there’s a blow to his back. Hyunah gives him a victorious smirk and pretends to pay attention to the MC—he’s trumpeting the usual nonsense about the Hallyu wave, and Dongwoon eases the boredom by elbowing Hyunah’s waist.

He’s bored, he realizes, suddenly. Not nervous. Hyunah laughs incredulously and puts a hand on his shoulder, leaning up to his ear. “Is this your idea of stage presence?” she whispers, breath hot on his skin. He blushes. “Because I liked seeing you squirm in formation much better.”

Dongwoon looks down at his empty hands and has an epiphany. “Do you…want to get ice cream after this?”

She wrinkles her nose. “What?”

He clears his throat. “I said, do you think this will be over soon.”

“No,” she says, leaning her head against Sohyun’s shoulder. The MC finishes his drivel to weary applause. “And yes.”

“Huh?”

Hyunah stretches her arm out to tap his shoulder and smirks. “You’re paying,” she mouths, and hides behind Jiyoon.

(Two hours later, Dongwoon gets a double scoop of mint chocolate chip, and Hyunah, not to be outdone, gets a triple scoop of superman in a gaudy waffle cone. Fitting, he thinks, since Hyunah is quite possibly his Kryptonite.)

oh my gosh, don't worry about it, i'm far slower, no lies! i love this so much! i love relationships within cube entertainment and this is no different ;~; and, and i love that the members just accept it and even help him out on shows, and that his power is that he generates things when he's nervous, because sometimes i notice that he seems to fiddle with whatever is in his hands, be it a mic or some other object, probably because he's nervous. ;~; i love it so much.

and of course, i love how hyunah becomes his kryptonite, that's the best, most adorable thing in the world. i also love how you describe their interactions so gorgeously and omg i'll shut up now and leave you alone, i-i-i just love everything, forever. thank you so much ;____;♥♥
