hyoyeon can judge peoples lives by what card they pick out from the store. it’s the sad truth about working at hallmark, because she knows that everything is super expensive, but everyone comes here because they need to buy cards. he’s not much different from anyone else as he tries to slide inconspicuously towards the cards about romance while pretending that he’s laughing at all the cards with sound and cheesy hilarity instead. he discovers one after twenty minutes of searching and hides the face in the envelope. which she will have to take out to ring it up so she really has no idea why he is being so paranoid. he trips over his own shoes as he heads for the counter and she has to duck her head and shove her fist in her mouth to keep from laughing out loud. when he arrives he gives her a gummy, embarrassed smile that’s so endearing that she almost hear birds singing, but the message in the card is one of those sickening ones about how roses are red, violets are blue, but i love you and she realises what kind of guy he is. he winks at her. yep, definitely one of those guys. she rings it up and puts it in a nice little bag and says,“have a nice day,” trying to pretend her face didn’t flush even a little bit. he trips again over his shoes, and she wants to tell him to make sure he doesn’t have two left feet, but doesn’t. she likes her job. sort of. the boy ends up being the most excitement she has that entire day, with the rest of the day being old people and little kids trying to coax their mothers to buy them one of those too expensive stuffed animals. at the end of her shift, the seventy some year old lady who replaces her gives her a smile that was dull in comparison to the one she’d received earlier. she was almost surprised to see him two weeks later, looking like a drowned rat (it must have been raining outside) but more than that, he has hefty bags under his eyes and looks so depressed that she wants to shove one of those stuffed fish that have been staring at her cutely for the past hour into his arms and give him a hug. which would have been awkward because she’s way too short for him. this time, he finds a card much faster and he doesn’t trip even once. the card is one about always loving no matter what happens, and she wants to wince and tell him that he’s making the wrong call. but she holds her tongue, giving him a “free” lollipop instead. before she switches her shift this time, she adds two-fifty to the drawer from her wallet and pulls her umbrella out from under the desk. the third time she sees him, a month later, he’s looking (if possible) even more pathetic. he has a friend with him this time. “come on, hyukjae, let’s just go. this isn’t going to work.” but hyukjae’s jaw is as set as she’s ever seen it (not that she’s seen it much) and he strides resolutely towards the card stacks. the two quarrel over cards for the longest time. his friend wants him to just buy something hilarious and is otherwise not helping the situation (or what hyoyeon guesses is the situation). it doesn’t help that now she’s rolling his name around in her mind, internally matching their names together (both their names have seven letters and two syllables, and they both start with h!) finally they pick a card, and she’s almost sad that she can’t keep on watching the way he messes up her mouth when he’s thinking way too hard. the card, though, has a really sad puppy on the front, and she winces as she rings it up and packages it. her friend twirls a lollipop around his fingers and is looking at her, even when hyukjae leaves the registry. “do you know the way to a womans’ heart?” his friend asks suddenly, and hyukjae turns so suddenly that she’s surprised his shoe didn’t squeal on the floor. “donghae, let’s go.” donghae flaps his hand idly in his direction. his eyes are still excitedly staring at her face. hyoyeon looks from donghae to hyukjae and back. “no,” hyukjae visibly deflates. “but i think flowers and chocolates might be a good idea.” the two grin at each other, and hyoyeon is sort of surprised by how much happier hyukjae looks. donghae grins at her and examines her breat. nametag. “thanks hyoyeonnie, you’re a dear!” he exclaims. she’s no longer surprised to see hyukjae in the store every other week. but this time he comes alone, no donghae attached. this time, he’s holding a bag in his arms as though he’s already done some shopping, and also a card. he also looks happier than he has in ages. when she rings up his purchase (a brand new confessions card, one about birds of a feather flock together, or something) and she’s almost surprise that he found a new girl already. “thanks,” he grins when she gives him the purchase, and she smiles at him. like she always does. after work, she dons her coat and pulls the hood over her shoulder because it’s raining and she forgot to bring her umbrella. she’s supposed to meet tiffany later today but if she hurries, she can go get some food and change. what happens though, ends up being very different because hyukjae is waiting for her outside the mall. it’s not her imagination either, because he doesn’t move until she exits, and he’s holding a card and a heart-shaped box. cheesy. really, really cheesy. she swallows nervously, because she knows what’s coming and her heart is pounding in her ears. “hi,” hyukjae grins. “i’ve seen you around a lot.” every time he pauses his gums flash endearingly. she waits (im)patiently for him to continue. “i think, i like you. i mean of course i like you, but i think i really, really like you.” he holds up the card, and when she opens it (her hands shaking because she’s never really had this happen to her before) she finds that it’s the same one as before. she looks up at him, eyes twinkling through her blonde hair. “a word of advice,” she says, and he starts to deflate a bit. “i like the funny cards.” she takes a breathe, wondering if she’ll actually do this. “i also like coffee shops, would you like to go with me?” his smile is kind of dazzling, she decides, and so is his hug. it’s warm and her mouth meets his shoulder and it’s warm and fuzzy and he’s so awkward that somehow, it just seems to click. when they pull apart, she’s dazed by his overpowering cologne but she doesn’t say anything because his smile kind of knocked the breathe out of her. “i know a good coffee shop nearby,” he says, scratching the back of his neck. “you’re the captain,” she grins, slipping her hand into his. a/n: lol i don't even. i'm sorry this is so awful -dies- |
