Sulli was often known as a fickle person, something she disagreed with completely. Why it must be her fault that the world is just so moronic at times, eludes her, time and time again. She had every right to scoff at the mc for repeating every thing she said, even though she said it perfectly clearly. She had every right to laugh at Donghae for tripping over a chair and landing on his face, because it was funny. She had every right to look bored on shows, as did Krystal, because the shows were boring enough to be on unless she could laugh about people and pull at the well-stitched threads that held the many barriers between the real world and the camera out one by one. For all that she loved the camera, she certainly found her nerves shorting out one after the other like fuses at the constant lies placed before her. It wasn't that bad, for the most part she could be herself, so long as she read the scripts given to her that planned out her life. To her, the entire world was playing pretend and she longed for something away from the fake smiles and the forced laughs. She didn't have to look far, when she was lying on the bottom bunk and staring at the light peaking around the edges of the bedframe of Luna's light as she read before bed. She could almost hear her mouthing the words like a mantra up above her, and she swept her bangs out of her eyes and kicked her long legs up into the air, her heels connecting with the bottom of the top mattress and lifting it ever so slightly. There was a squeak of surprise from above. Sulli just had time to lower her legs and tip her head to the side in faked slumber before Luna's golden hair cascaded over the edge and into vision. The shining locks were quickly followed by a pair of owl-wide hazel eyes, reflecting the small book light and accenting the shock before they melted into crescent moons. "What is it?" Luna asked. Sulli raised her head and threw her a quizzical look, glad that her lips were hidden in shadow as she struggled to hide the smirk playing on the corners. "Your light is annoying," she lied. She turned around to face the wall and her neatly arranged pile of stuffed animals, her legs twisting in her sheets under her comforter. She could feel Luna's gaze lingering on her turned back but she refused to catch that pretty gaze again. A shuffling told her that Luna had given up, and soon enough, the bedroom was plunged into darkness. She twisted her long fingers into the ear of her stuffed puppy and pressed her face into the nose of its gentle fur. Her heart was thundering in her ears and the bottom of her stomach dropped out from under her and goosebumps had risen to her skin. The dinner Victoria had so carefully prepared squirmed around inside, going cold even as her chest flooded with a warmth that she found puzzling, but not uncomfortable. She pursed her lips together in annoyance. The past few weeks had been much like this. Every time she made eye contact with the far too bubbly and enchanting girl above her, that feeling would return, slipping through her chest and curling around her heart like a warm blanket or her favorite teddy bear. When she closed her eyes, she saw those light hazel eyes turning into slivers in her mind as clear as daylight. It was like sunshine, brightening up her entire world as though she'd stepped out onto the beach. Luna had always been endearing--if a bit annoying at times. Sometimes she couldn't help the moody scoff that crossed her lips at how bubbly and chatty she was. Other times, she found herself giving into the smile and chatting right along with her. It was hard to stay annoyed at a smile that drew back the gray clouds and brought in an overwhelming sunshine. As much control as Sulli had over her emotions, which came from being a child actress, she still found herself unable to keep a frown on her face whenever her cheerful bandmate was involved. Unknowingly, she fell asleep with a thin smile gracing her lips. Morning greeted her with an unforgiving alarm and sunlight streaming in through white curtains. Sulli grumbled and drew her blanket up over her head, twisting around and tangling her hair around her neck. Afterthought reminded her that she forgot to braid her long hair before bed again. A few seconds passed, during which she fought the approach of a new day by keeping her eyes clamped stubbornly closed. Until a cheerful hum snapped her eyes open in disbelief. One of Luna's least favorable hobbies was that she would greet the day with a "song" and making Sulli suffer through it too. It wasn't that she didn't want to hear it; Luna's voice as wonderful even at it's worst. Sulli had never been a morning person, however, and waking up to an overly cheerful hum was enough to put anyone in a bad mood. She kicked the coverlet off her legs and struggled for a moment against the chilled morning air before she fought to her way to a standing position. Luna was already up and picking out her wardrobe for the day out of the closet. Sulli scowled at the appearance of the rats nest on her head and picked up her brush, attacking her hair with ferocity brought on by rekindled annoyance. The day had started as busy as usual, with trips to the monotony of their daily routine of shows, practice, lessons, and interviews. Victoria disappeared sometime in the flurry of the day to her We Got Married schedule--Sulli didn't miss Luna's starry-eyed look as she bid their "mother" good luck with a generous smile. Krystal disappeared sometime after that to go home, and soon enough, Sulli and Luna found themselves back at the dorms together. Luna curled up on the couch with a book, and Sulli found herself taking out her guitar to practice, settling beside her and tucking her long locks behind her ear. They didn't hang out often, not together. Usually Sulli disappeared to hang out with one idol or some other more interesting obligation, and Luna stuck to her good-girl routine. She picked out a song from her practice booklet and strummed the chords of the instrument, feeling the vibrations move through her body with a slight hum. She plucked a few more chords until she was satisfied at the tone and then started, plugging away slowly at the song she had been trying to memorize for the past week. She heard the slowly turning pages of Luna's novel slowly stop but it didn't register until she finally finished playing it all the way through once. She looked up as the final notes were still ringing in the air and caught Luna's absorbing gaze. Sulli felt her cheeks flush a brilliant scarlet in shock, her fingers unintentionally tightening on the neck of the instrument in her lap. "Am I disturbing you?" She managed to stammer out, after fighting with the bulk of her tongue for what seemed like hours. Luna shook her head from side to side, that brilliant smile lighting up the corners of Sulli's vision. "Not at all, you play so prettily!" Luna complimented, her hands springing up and clapping so quickly that they reminded her of humming birds. Words that always seemed to be so hollow suddenly seemed real, and it occurred to Sulli that this was the first real compliment she'd ever gotten. She frowned, as that wasn't really the case, but it was better than the empty compliments of her parents on her acting, or their dancing coach on her dancing, or a stylist on her fashion. It was better even than the fans words of encouragement. She pegged it down and blamed Luna's smile, that beautiful, full light that lifted Luna's cheeks and eliminated the presence of gleeful hazel eyes. "Thanks," it sounded dry and unworthy compared to the full heart and inspiring smile currently beaming at her in full force. A blow hit her like a cannon ball as realization struck her, suddenly and completely. It scared her, dried her mouth and dropped sandbags through the paper-bottom of her stomach, and she braced for impact as her mind centered on that smile and held it close between her arms and beside to her heart. Midnight approached and crept by, and the small clock beside her bed read two in the morning when she glanced at it. Sulli found herself staring up at the black upper bunk. She was supposed to have fallen asleep hours ago--they had to get up for schedule in just a few hours. She restlessly twisted her long legs in the sheets--her bed already impossibly messy. She hid half her face in the comforter an tightened her thin arms around the neck of her stuffed dog, but to no avail, her eyes refused to close against the unforgiving night. She growled in annoyance and sat up, throwing her long braid over her shoulder in annoyance, fingers twisting in her bangs and pulling them out of her face irately. She was never going to get any sleep when her every thought continually rushed to Luna slumbering peacefully in the top bunk. In aggravation, she punched her pillow and threw her comforter back. She stood on the edge of her bunk and lifted her head until her eyes caught on the golden cascading hair of her bunkmate. The locks turned dark in the gloom of night, scattered across her pillow. One hand rested beside her face on the pillow and the other was bundled in her comforter. A clump of short hair had fallen over her eyes, and Luna brushed at it unconsciously with her hand. Before she knew what she was doing, Sulli reached out and tucked the strands behind Luna's ear, her fingers lingering on the smooth skin of her warm cheek for a long moment. She realized what she was doing wit the deft recognition of one who had surrendered herself to her fate, and she lifted herself to her tippy-toes in the dark, pressing a lingering kiss on Luna's forehead before she dropped down onto her mattress and hid in her blankets, burrowing her face in between her pillow and her stuffed animals. She was in deep, if the fluttering in her heart told her anything, but she wasn't sure how she could stop her hurtle towards disaster--or even if she wanted to. She wasn't an idiot. She knew that idols weren't supposed to fall for each other, no matter how much fanfiction was written about them or how many fans pined for the reality of their existence. Most idols had relationships of their own that they drew off of to fuel the fanservice that delighted fans. Usually she thought it was hilarious, if a little gross, but right now she'd give anything to not be feeling what she was. She swallowed hard, and subjected herself to a dreamworld full of gleeful laughter and an openly welcoming smile and a song that never stopped singing in her heart, a constant melody filled by Luna's wholesome voice. Sulli decided that avoidance was the best course of option now, and remarkably, she found it rather easy to do even though they were roommates. During the day she hung out with Krystal most of the time and in the evening she ate out with friends or fellow idols. She often played late with her friends, going to noraebang or some other fun activity. She had to make it back by curfew, however, so she often found herself sitting next to Luna on the couch on accident or having to help her do the dishes for being late. Her avoidance tactic worked fine, until their fingers touched over a plate Luna handed her to dry. Sulli yanked her hand back too fast and only Luna's quick reflexes saved the porcelain from a catastrophic death. Sulli pulled the apron from around her neck and threw it onto the counter in a wadded heap. "I'm sick of this," she declared, sending her steaming gaze into Luna's surprised and confused face before she turned on her heel and locked herself in the shower. She heard Victoria ask Luna what was wrong but she drowned out the reply by a quick twist of her wrist to start the shower. Luna was up and reading in bed when she entered the room. She glanced up at Sulli's entrance and quickly shut the book. "I'm sorry, I'm done, good night!" She squeaked in surprise, turning off her lamp and burrowing her head under her pillow as though it would stave off any sudden outburst from the younger girl. Sulli crossed the room and climbed half way up the ladder to survey the blonde in silence for a moment. Then she picked up the pillow and ground it into the back of her head. Luna's squeal was muffled by the soft cotton. Sulli tossed the pillow down the length of the bed and gave Luna's lock a short tug. Luna looked up at her with apprehensive hazel eyes that made Sulli roll her own. "Unnie," she rolled a hair tie between her thumb and forefinger. "Will you help me braid my hair?" Luna gaped at her for a moment, and then two and two clicked as she deduced that Sulli must have forgiven her for whatever it was she did. "Of course!" She babbled excitedly, sitting up in a cross-legged position. Sulli's smile ghosted over her lips as she took a seat in front of her, legs resting on the rungs of the ladder. Luna's hairbrush smoothed her long hair back, her nimble fingers separating her hair into three different parts. She started humming as she worked, each brush of her finger against Sulli's scalp bringing a slight blush to her cheeks. She tried to keep her heart from beating too loud in her chest, but she couldn't help its steady beat as it seemed to grow louder and louder in her ears until she was sure that Luna could hear it too. Luna chimed "finished!" what seemed like entirely to soon, and Sulli found herself pouting that her hair wasn't longer and wishing that Luna's fingers weren't so nimble. She turned around, the braid winding over her shoulder and down her arm, and the smile Luna gave her was enough proof that she had forgotten all about the incident while doing dishes. Sulli found herself lost in that gentle, sunshine smile that shared happiness with any who happened upon it. "Thanks," she said, holding Luna's gaze far longer than necessary. It was time for her to go down to her cold and lonely bunk, and she found that she didn't want to. She fluttered her long lashes and stuck out her bottom lip, fluttering her eyes obnoxiously. "Unnie, can I sleep up here with you tonight?" She pouted. "I can't sleep down there." It wasn't a lie, she really couldn't sleep, not lately. The bags that she felt Luna's gaze slip to was proof enough. A desperation had risen in her, as each night that went by found her peeking at Luna while she slept like a therapeutic nightmare, and each night she denied her new hobby was a night spent in sleepless desperation. But Sulli wasn't the type of person to deny herself or her passions for long without getting tired of it, and she was far past tired of it now. She gave up the obnoxious fact that she wasn't supposed to be taking a step in the direction of truth--as an idol whose life was made up of bitter lies, this was far from taboo--it was unheard of. Luna nodded, and moved over, tossing her childhood pillow onto the floor to give some more room in the already cramped up space. Sulli grabbed her pillow off the bottom bunk and burrowed her cold feet under Luna's warm covers. Her toes accidentally brushed Luna's shin and made her giggle with surprise. Sulli tried to keep herself as far from Luna as possible, back resting right up against the guard on side to keep ahold of some dignity, but she fell asleep to the rise and fall of Luna's chest and she wondered why she cared. She sunk into that familiar warm of sunshine and happy laughter--feeling immensely warm all over. Until she woke up to an arm throwing itself over her side and Luna's warm breath on her cheeks. Sulli breathed in the scent of cinnamon and vanilla for a stunned moment before she realized that the warm glow hadn't really faded, and that Luna had somehow wrapped her in a secure embrace. Sulli's arms--sticks at her sides, rose almost automatically and encircled that thin waist, heart thundering madly within her chest. She wasn't sure if she was dreaming of if she was awake, but she held her still for a long moment before she turned around and tried to untangle herself from the mass of warmth and hide back in her cold wasteland below. She managed to get partway down the ladder into the frigid air before a hand shot out and grabbed hers, twining their fingers to stop any thought of escape. Sulli swallowed her tongue and choked, coughing and spluttering in the cold night air. Luna raised her head and gave her a sleepy stare, but all Sulli could feel was the warmth of her hand, fingers twisted into hers and trapping her between warmth and cold. Sulli opened her mouth to try and give an excuse, water, or bathroom or something, but then Luna smiled. "Come to bed," she murmured, and any excuse Sulli tried to make died on her lips. She closed her mouth with a snap and automatically slipped back under the covers, sighing at the warmth that greeted her. Luna wrapped her free arm around her waist and pulled her close. In the silence, Sulli was surprised to feel her heartbeat, matching with her own. Warm lips touched her temple and a flood of shocked warmth flooded her body from her head to her toes. Sulli's eyes opened wide at the contact, and Luna raised their still joined hands between their bodies, a pleased smile etched across her lips. Even in the darkness, Sulli could see the happiness flowing from her bright eyes, and she fought back a giggle. For all that Sulli knew that idols weren't supposed to fall in love with each other, weren't supposed to take the mask of fiction off themselves, she couldn't help it. Luna was like a candle flame, and she was a moth drawn to it. "I love you," she whispered, brushing Luna's hair behind her ear with an affectionate finger. Luna's mouth curved into a smile in her sleep, slipping into well used creases. For all that the smile glowed like sunshine, Sulli found her eyes slipping closed and her body relaxed to the warmth of Luna's overwhelming glow. She fell willingly into a world of sunshine and happy laughter, fingers warm against the accompanying hand as it led her onward into a field of wild sunflowers and clear blue skies. |
